A one-bedroom in Savannah for a riverboat trip

Wright Square in Savannah, Georgia, with live oaks and surrounding historic buildings on a clear morning

If you want one bedroom, a kitchen, and a dog along for the trip, the answer in our Savannah portfolio is the Wright Square Condo. It's a second-floor apartment with one bedroom and one bathroom, it sleeps two, it allows pets, and it looks out over Wright Square and the Federal courthouse. That's the whole shortlist. Everything else we rent in town has two bedrooms or more, and if you're reading closely, that's the useful fact on this page: a true one-bedroom in a historic Savannah building is a rarer thing than the search results suggest.

Why the condo works for two people and a dog

580 square feet, one bedroom with a king bed, an open living room and kitchen, and a stackable washer/dryer in the hall between the bedroom and the bathroom. The front windows are the best thing in it: big, south-facing light over the square, with a high-top table for three and a desk pulled into it. The bathroom has a tub/shower combo, which matters if you've got a dog who's been rolling around on River Street all afternoon.

The whole apartment is yours. There's one locked mechanical closet and nothing else off-limits, and you won't see us unless something in the unit needs fixing. Entry is keyless, so nobody is coordinating a handoff while you're circling the block. Wi-Fi throughout. Guests have left 57 reviews on it, averaging just under a 9.7 out of 10, which is about as close to a consensus as short-term rentals get.

On pets: the condo accepts them, and the current listing is where the rules, fees and any size or breed conditions live. Message us or call before you book if you want that nailed down. We answer.

Getting to the boat, and the thing nobody tells you

The riverboats run from the River Street Riverboat Company, with the ticket office at 9 East River Street, near Olympia Cafe and River Street Sweets. Two vessels: the Georgia Queen and the Savannah River Queen. The narrated sightseeing cruise is an afternoon sailing, a round trip of about an hour and a half that takes you down past the Talmadge Memorial Bridge and Old Fort Jackson. The dinner entertainment cruise boards for a seven o'clock departure and runs about two hours with a buffet. From March through October they add a Saturday luncheon cruise and a Sunday brunch cruise, plus a Monday gospel dinner cruise and a moonlight sailing through the year. Prices and sailing times shift, so book them directly with the operator.

Here's what will actually decide your evening: parking downtown near the river on a cruise night is a genuine hassle, and the boat does not wait. Give yourself a solid half hour to an hour beyond whatever your map app says, between finding a space and walking down to the dock. The Bryan Street garage and the River Street and Bay Street level lots are the usual plays.

Which is the argument for staying in the Historic District and walking. The condo has no parking of its own: street parking around it is metered and enforced from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and there's a paid garage at West State and Drayton. Park the car once when you arrive, then leave it. On a trip built around a boat with a hard boarding time, not driving to the dock is worth more than any amenity on a listing page.

What else Savannah gives you from that door

Wright Square sits in the middle of the squares you came to see, which means the ghost tours, the museum blocks, the architecture, and the walk down toward Bay Street all start from the same corner. In March the city fills for St. Patrick's Day and the Historic District becomes the event, which is either exactly what you want or a reason to look at a quieter street. Savannah is flat and shaded and built for walking, and the dog will log more miles than you expect.

If the trip grows a beach day, Tybee Island is about half an hour out across the marsh on one road in and one road out. Allow longer on a summer weekend afternoon, because there's no way around the traffic once you're in it.

If the party gets bigger than two

The condo sleeps two, full stop, so a third person means a different house. These are the ones to look at, and none of them take dogs:

  • Pied-à-Terre on East Waldburg: a second-floor apartment one block from Forsyth Park, with the main bedroom on the entry level and a spiral staircase up to a loft with two full beds. Two bedrooms, sleeps six, free parking.
  • Thomas Square Affair Unit B: the upstairs half of a 1910 Victorian in Thomas Square, two bedrooms and one bath, sleeps four, with original hardwood floors, tall ceilings, and one dedicated driveway space. A short walk from the free DOT shuttle.
  • Casa d'Arte: four bedrooms and three baths on Habersham Street, just south of Whitefield Square and three blocks from Forsyth, with a sitting room fireplace and a dining table for six. Sleeps eight.
  • Liberty Street Redbrick Town and Carriage House: a three-story townhome by Crawford Square with a courtyard, a gas firepit, an elevator, and two garage spaces, plus a separate one-bedroom carriage house across the courtyard. Sleeps eight, and the parking alone makes it the easiest arrival of the group.
